13.

Kort sat back in the pilot's chair, dozing. At the sound of his travelling companions in the doorway, he cracked one eye open. "You didn't scream in agony so I thought I'd have a power nap," he said, sitting up. "One of us might as well."

"Uncle Kort, this is Delta," Max said.

"He's your uncle?" she asked.

Max shook his head. "No, well . . . yeah . . . it's hard to explain."

"I'm the closest thing he's got to family right now, so he can just continue calling me uncle if he likes," Kort said defensively.

"Okay old man, calm down . . ." Delta said, looking off to the side with a mischievous grin.

The helm console beeped.

"Ah. Here we are. Dropping from Jump in three, two, one," Kort said. He pulled back on the Jump Drive controls and the Fair Maiden slowed back into normal space.

Hantor lay before them – a sprawling metropolis that covered nearly the entire surface of the planet. A grey skin of industry shrouded in a scummy brown haze that the binary suns of that system were hard-pressed to penetrate. Too many space stations to count hung around the planet, an endless stream of starships travelling to and fro.

"What is this place? I thought we were going to an asteroid field," Delta said.

"We've already been there. There's something we've got to do here. It's as good a hiding place from the Sjan as any," Max said.

"Look, when I said I'd trust you, I didn't mean I'd let myself get dragged along with whatever it is you lot are up to here," Delta said. "I've got my own problems, like I told you."

"Listen girl, it's a stop-off," Kort said. "That's it. You don't have to come with us. Stay on the ship. Be my guest. In actual fact, I insist."

Delta glared at him, but visibly made a conscious effort to rein in her temper. "So what's this place called?"

"Hantor. Trading capital of the Terran Union. All the big business goes down here. It used to be a colony, would you believe?" Kort said. He piloted the Fair Maiden toward the vast metropolis. "Look at it. Have you ever seen a more ugly god-forsaken planet?"

Max found it hard to argue with him when it came to finding something about Hantor that was visually pleasing. Especially when you came from a paradise like Aquine was – or had been. Places like Hantor made a person all the more homesick for what was gone.

"So what're you looking for here, anyway?" Delta asked Max.

"I need to see someone. A man that can help me find some information. That's all I can say, really–"

"Boys and girls," Kort said, giving Max a look that told him to keep his mouth shut. "Take a seat and save it for later. I'm taking us down. There may be a little turbulence."

Kort buckled himself in, and the others followed suit. Max, Delta, and K1R-B were soon harnessed into the pillion seats arranged along one side of the
